Trae Young ‘Disappointed’ Over Hawks Contract Situation

Young Trae Injury

The Atlanta Hawks front office might want to take action if they don’t want to lose their star player, Trae Young.

Young isn’t exactly hiding how he feels about his contract situation.

The Hawks star is “disappointed” he hasn’t been offered an extension yet, according to ESPN’s Marc Spears.

“What I’m hearing now, at this point—and you can tell by Trae’s tweet, and I saw him during the Finals—I think he’s disappointed that it hasn’t come, it hasn’t been offered,” Spears said Tuesday on NBA Today. “So don’t be surprised at this point if he plays this out, and sees what happens next summer.”

Young is eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million extension right now. He’s under contract through 2025-26, with a player option for 2026-27, but his patience seems to be wearing thin.

In July, Young posted an hourglass emoji on X (formerly Twitter)—a not-so-subtle nod to the waiting game.

Then came this, in response to Micah Parsons’ contract standoff with Jerry Jones.

“This why you pay the man early, when someone will take less early to stay in a place he wanted to be forever, you do it… the price only goes up now! Get what you deserve bro!”

That’s about as clear as it gets.

Young just led the league in assists (11.6 per game) while averaging 24.2 points and 3.1 rebounds. He’s not only producing—he’s made it known he wants to stay. But according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, other teams are already “closely watching and monitoring” how this plays out.

The new CBA rules and tax aprons seem to be getting in the way a little more than they used to be, that’s for sure.

The team can’t be surprised if Young tries to take his talents elsewhere.
