Victor Wembanyama has opened up about the reasoning behind taking less than the maximum contract extension available to him, making it clear his priority was giving the San Antonio Spurs the best chance to compete for championships.
The Spurs superstar agreed to a five-year, $252 million extension that starts at 25 percent of the salary cap rather than the 30 percent he could eventually qualify for through future accolades. That decision could give San Antonio significantly more financial flexibility over the life of the deal, according to Jason Jones of The Athletic.
Wembanyama said the decision was about the team’s future rather than his own earnings, speaking with Jones after being announced as one of the cover athletes for NBA 2K27.
“We have a good team, we had a very good playoff run, and we had a very good regular season,” according to the Athletic. “But what’s even better and greater is our potential. The reality of today’s NBA is that often, the potential of teams is not fulfilled because of money. I just want to make sure it’s never our case.”
With the NBA’s second apron continuing to reshape roster building, teams have increasingly been forced to sacrifice key contributors to remain financially compliant.
Wembanyama’s decision gives the Spurs additional breathing room as they prepare for future extensions for young stars like Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper while already carrying De’Aaron Fox on a maximum contract.
The 22-year-old has quickly become one of the league’s biggest stars. Last season he averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game while leading San Antonio to the NBA Finals. He also captured Defensive Player of the Year honours, earned First Team All-NBA selection and finished third in MVP voting.
His growing influence was recognised again this week after being named one of the cover athletes for NBA 2K27 alongside Caitlin Clark and Derrick Rose.
Wembanyama admitted the achievement still feels surreal.
“I know it means a lot culturally, too,” Wembanyama said. “It’s hard to realize for me that I’m taking more and more space, more real estate in the world of basketball, in what basketball means, in professional basketball.”
