Lakers Make Bronny James Roster Move

James (201)

Bronny James is heading back to the G League after struggling to find consistent playing time with the Los Angeles Lakers to begin the 2026-27 NBA season.

The Lakers assigned the 22-year-old guard to their G League affiliate, the Coachella Valley Lakers, on Thursday, with the team preparing to open its season against the Salt Lake City Stars on Friday, according to ESPN.

James, now entering his third NBA season, has barely featured in Los Angeles’ rotation despite the team’s impressive 7-2 start.

Through five appearances, the young guard has averaged just 2.4 minutes and 0.8 points per game, with head coach JJ Redick largely relying on his established rotation during the opening weeks.

However, James has previously shown he can produce when given consistent opportunities in the G League.

Across 25 appearances over the previous two seasons with the South Bay Lakers, James averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 assists and 4 rebounds per game.

He also shot an impressive 49.6 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from three-point range, demonstrating the offensive potential that has yet to translate into a regular NBA role.

The latest assignment comes during a period of significant change for the Lakers’ developmental program.

Previously known as the South Bay Lakers, the franchise has relocated to Palm Desert and rebranded as the Coachella Valley Lakers ahead of the new season.

The team will now play its home games at Acrisure Arena, moving away from the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo.

There has also been a coaching change, with Alex Cerda taking over from Zack Guthrie, who joined Redick’s coaching staff in Los Angeles.

Bronny won’t be the only Lakers prospect heading to Coachella Valley, with rookie Cameron Carr also assigned to the G League affiliate on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have enjoyed an impressive opening to the NBA season, sitting at 7-2 alongside Houston near the top of the Western Conference standings.

For James, the move provides another opportunity to secure regular minutes and continue developing his game while attempting to earn a more consistent role with the Lakers.

With Coachella Valley’s season beginning Friday, he could have an immediate opportunity to make an impact.
