Karl-Anthony Towns isn’t hiding his frustration with the New York Knicks after the franchise unexpectedly put contract extension negotiations on hold.
The Knicks announced Friday that they would be postponing all extension discussions until later in the season, leaving several key players, including Towns, waiting for answers.
Towns admitted the decision caught him completely off guard.
“It was news to me,” Towns said speaking to reporters following Sunday’s practice. “Very disappointed to say the least. Let’s state the obvious: It’s business, but there is business on the court for us to handle.”
The six-time All-Star is eligible for an extension worth up to $276 million, although New York has reportedly offered him a four-year deal worth $200 million, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Knicks owner James Dolan has remained firm on his stance against entering the NBA’s second salary cap apron, creating complications as the franchise looks to retain its championship-winning core.
In a statement released Friday, the Knicks explained their decision to temporarily suspend negotiations.
“As an organization, our entire focus is preparing for the upcoming season and delivering another year for our fans to be proud of,” the team said. “As a result, we will not be negotiating contract extensions until later in the season and will remain solely focused on preparing for the start of the season.”
Towns played a major role in helping New York capture its first NBA championship in 53 years last season, averaging 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists throughout the playoffs.
With a $61 million player option awaiting him next season, Towns could eventually face a significant decision regarding his future in New York.
However, the star big man insists his attention remains on defending the championship rather than his contract situation.
“Because I never thought we would get to that point,” Towns said when asked about potentially declining his option. “But I think right now what’s best for our team is we just focus on the basketball. It’s going to be a fun game tomorrow.”
