Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors have agreed to a two-year, $115 million contract extension that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, according to the New York Post.
The deal comes shortly after Leonard officially returned to the franchise where he won his second NBA championship.
Leonard previously spent just one season in Toronto, but it became one of the most memorable individual seasons in franchise history. He led the Raptors to their first NBA championship in 2019, earning Finals MVP before leaving for the Los Angeles Clippers that offseason.
Seven years later, Leonard has found his way back.
His trade to Toronto was initially placed on hold while the NBA investigated the Clippers for salary cap circumvention. Los Angeles was eventually fined $30 million and stripped of five first-round picks, while Leonard received a $700,000 fine for his involvement.
Once the investigation concluded, the trade was completed and Leonard officially began his second stint with the Raptors.
Leonard recently explained that his decision to return wasn’t simply about finding the easiest path to another championship.
“I’m not really championship chasing, trying to find the best team I could win [with],” Leonard said on the Raptors’ Open Gym YouTube channel.
“I didn’t want to put on a thousand jerseys. The city took a liking to my family, I took a liking to the city. Really enjoyed it. My son was born here, and he’s been asking me forever when he’s going to come back.”
His connection to Toronto and the experiences his family had during his first stint played a major role in bringing him back.
Leonard now joins a Raptors team that already features Scottie Barnes and finished last season as a top-five seed in the Eastern Conference.
The two-time Finals MVP’s first stint in Toronto lasted only one year.
With a new $115 million extension now in place, his second stay is set to last considerably longer.
