Amen Thompson Lands Massive $208 Million Deal

Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension that will keep him with the Houston Rockets through 2032, according to ESPN.

The deal also includes a 10 percent trade kicker and represents the same percentage of Houston’s salary cap as Alperen Sengun’s five-year, $185 million extension signed in 2024, sources told ESPN.

It’s another major commitment from the Rockets to a player who has quickly become a huge part of their future.

Thompson, 23, is coming off the best season of his young career, averaging career highs of 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals. He also led the entire NBA in minutes played while finishing eighth in total steals and fourth in loose ball recoveries.

His production also placed him alongside some of the biggest names in basketball.

Thompson was one of only nine players last season to average at least 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists, joining Sengun, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Scottie Barnes, Jalen Johnson, Paolo Banchero, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum.

The former No. 4 overall pick has also shown Houston plenty of versatility since entering the league in 2023. Thompson spent much of last season playing point guard following Fred VanVleet’s absence, but has proven capable of playing across both guard positions and in the frontcourt.

Houston has now secured much of its young core for the long haul.

Thompson joins Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason among the Rockets’ young players signed to multiyear extensions. The franchise also previously agreed to a two-year, $90 million extension with Kevin Durant, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.

The Rockets have won 52 games in each of the past two seasons, and Thompson’s new deal ensures one of their fastest-rising players will remain part of their plans.

Thompson also becomes just the second player from the 2023 NBA Draft class to agree to a rookie extension, joining San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.
