Steph Curry will have plenty of options when it comes to deciding how the final years of his Warriors career will look.
Golden State is essentially allowing Steph to choose the structure of his next contract, with the franchise making it clear there will be no traditional negotiation process with its longtime superstar, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
Curry became eligible Saturday to sign a maximum two-year, $136.7 million extension, but the Warriors are reportedly comfortable with whatever direction the 12-time All-Star wants to take.
“They’re not like negotiating with Steph Curry right now,” Slater said on ESPN’s Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast. “They are saying, ‘You can do this, you can do this, you can do this. If you want the one-year max, if you want the two-year max, if you want to wait, here’s your menu. Pick off your menu.'”
The decision gives Curry significant flexibility as he approaches his 18th NBA season and prepares to turn 39 in March.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy has already made it clear the organization intends to extend Curry. The bigger question is whether Curry wants to commit for one additional season, two, or potentially wait before making a longer-term decision.
Whatever he chooses, leaving Golden State doesn’t appear to be part of the plan.
“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson.
“The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season, and the fact that the team we’re coming back with has a lot of familiarity.”
Curry has spent his entire NBA career with the Warriors since being selected seventh overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.
Now, rather than forcing its franchise player into a specific timeline, Golden State appears prepared to let Steph determine exactly how the final chapter of his career will be structured.
Whether that means one more year, two more years or waiting before signing anything, the decision is firmly in Curry’s hands.
