The Golden State Warriors have no plans to trade Steph Curry, but there is one scenario that could completely change the conversation.
Curry would have to ask out.
Golden State remains committed to building around its franchise star and won’t consider moving him unless Curry explicitly tells the organization he wants to leave, according to the report from Roundtable Sports.
The conversation around Curry’s future has grown louder following another disappointing season for the Warriors, who finished 10th in the Western Conference and lost in the second play-in game.
Former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins believes Curry should already be thinking about what comes next if Golden State can’t put another contender around him.
“Steph needs to be planning his exit strategy from the Golden State Warriors,” Perkins said. “Not this year, but think about it: Over the last four years, the Warriors have been in the play-in tournament. And guess what? This year, the way that the West has stacked up? They’re going to be a play-in tournament team again.
“So, if you’re Stephen Curry, going on the age of 39, and you look at this roster knowing that you have four NBA championships and knowing what a championship roster looks like, you can’t waste any more time hoping and thinking that Mike Dunleavy is going to get it right or make the moves that’s needed to make sure you’re able to compete for a title, especially in a tough Western Conference.”
Golden State hasn’t exactly stood still. The Warriors explored several major moves during the offseason, including talks involving LeBron James, while also reportedly showing interest in Jaylen Brown and Anthony Davis.
None of those blockbuster possibilities materialized. Instead, the Warriors brought back Draymond Green, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, Gary Payton II and De’Anthony Melton.
Curry is now entering his 18th NBA season, all of them with Golden State, and remains capable of performing at an All-Star level.
