The Golden State Warriors reportedly had a chance to acquire Jaylen Brown before last season’s trade deadline, but questions about his long-term fit prevented the organization from making a move.
The Warriors discussed a deal for Brown but ultimately decided against it because they could not reach an agreement internally about whether he was the right player to lead the franchise after Stephen Curry, according to Logan Murdock of The Ringer.
“The Warriors couldn’t build an organizational consensus that Brown would be the right player to carry the Warriors beyond the Curry era,” Murdock reported.
The decision has become a major talking point after Brown’s standout campaign with the Boston Celtics. Following Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury during the 2025 NBA Playoffs, Brown stepped into the role of Boston’s primary option and delivered one of the best seasons of his career. He averaged 28.7 points per game while leading the Celtics to a 56-26 record and the No. two seed in the Eastern Conference.
Despite that production, Brown eventually became one of the biggest names on the trade market before being dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he later joined a star-studded roster alongside LeBron James.
Golden State, meanwhile, has spent much of the offseason searching for another marquee player to pair with Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. The Warriors have been linked to several blockbuster pursuits but have come up empty, including reported interest in LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
That repeated cycle of chasing elite talent has reportedly started to wear on Curry.
Curry is “probably a little tired of star chasing,” according to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, with the continued pursuit of unavailable superstars creating growing frustration around the organization.
Even so, Murdock reported that Curry has remained committed to finishing his career in Golden State despite the uncertainty surrounding the roster.
The Warriors now face an important stretch as they try to maximize what remains of Curry’s championship window. With Butler returning from a torn ACL, Kristaps Porzingis coming off an injury-plagued season and Curry managing knee issues of his own, Golden State’s decision to pass on Brown could become one of the defining “what if” moments of this era.
