LeBron James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers wasn’t just about joining another contender. Behind the scenes, one of the biggest questions surrounding the decision centred on Joel Embiid and his health, and the reigning MVP’s response appears to have played a major role.
While Philadelphia’s star-studded roster featuring Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown was always appealing, concerns over Embiid’s durability remained a legitimate obstacle throughout the process.
Those concerns were addressed directly during a private meeting between James and Embiid in Los Angeles, according to NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of ScoopB.com.
Robinson reported that Embiid gave James personal reassurance about his health after completing his first surgery-free offseason, a conversation that significantly changed how James viewed Philadelphia’s championship outlook.
With a healthy Embiid leading the frontcourt, the Sixers’ roster suddenly looked far more stable heading into the 2026-27 season.
A league source also explained why Philadelphia’s roster construction became so attractive once Embiid’s availability was no longer viewed as the biggest concern.
“Joel had some brief conversations, but the reality of it is, when you look at this team, if Joel’s healthy, he’s your best player, right? But if he’s your fourth-best player, either way it goes, you’ve got a lock because you’ve got a very, very, very good team,” the source told Robinson.
Beyond Embiid, Philadelphia’s supporting cast only strengthened James’ confidence in the move.
Tyrese Maxey’s relationship with James, built through offseason workouts, was viewed as another major positive, while the arrival of Jaylen Brown gave the Sixers another proven All-NBA talent on the wing. Veteran coach Nick Nurse and executive advisor Bob Myers also helped reinforce the belief that Philadelphia had assembled a legitimate championship environment.
Rather than chasing the biggest contract available, James prioritised basketball fit.
With Embiid assuring him he was entering the season fully healthy and a roster capable of competing at the highest level already in place, Philadelphia ultimately offered what James believed was his clearest path to another NBA championship in Year 24.
