Donald Trump Set to Attend NBA Finals

President Donald Trump says he plans to attend an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden next month as the New York Knicks continue their historic postseason run.

Trump revealed the news Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting, confirming that Knicks owner James Dolan personally invited him to attend the Finals in New York.

“I think I’ll be going to one of the games,” Trump told reporters. “I was invited by numerous people, and [Dolan], and I think I’ll be going.”

If Trump attends, he would become the first sitting President of the United States to attend an NBA Finals game. Over the past few years, Trump has regularly appeared at major sporting events, including Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans and the College Football Playoff National Championship Game earlier this year in Miami.

The Knicks secured their place in the NBA Finals Monday night after completing a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. It marks New York’s first Finals appearance since 1999 and has completely transformed the atmosphere around Madison Square Garden.

Trump admitted he originally intended to attend Game five of the Eastern Conference Finals before New York ended the series earlier than expected.

“I was going to go on Wednesday,” Trump said. “But [the Knicks] closed it out very quickly. … Boy what a team, they won all their games. They have some great players.”

The Knicks enter the Finals on one of the most dominant playoff stretches in league history. New York has now won 11 straight games while outscoring opponents by 262 total points during that span.

Only three teams in NBA history have entered the Finals riding postseason winning streaks of at least 11 games, the 1989 Lakers, the 2001 Lakers and the 2017 Warriors.

Trump also acknowledged how much the Knicks’ resurgence means to New York after years of struggles.

“It’s great to see it,” Trump said. “The Knicks have really suffered for years.”
