Rui Hachimura Sends Clear Championship Message About Lakers

Rui Hachimura isn’t shying away from expectations in Los Angeles. The Lakers forward, who has quietly become one of the team’s most reliable floor spacers and a key piece off the bench, believes the gap between this group and true contention comes down to one word: consistency.

After the Lakers’ recent win over the Sacramento Kings, Hachimura made it clear what this team looks like at its best.

“I think when we play good, like really good, we look like a championship team,” Hachimura said after the Lakers’ victory over the Sacramento Kings. “But we have a lot of times that we’re not, and we look like we’re just literally out of the playoffs team.

“We have to focus. It’s a long season, you know, it’s a long season, like you said. We’ve had a lot of injured guys in and out so we have a different rotation, different starting lineup. I think we have to focus on that part. We have to play together, play hard and that’s gonna be really good for us, staying consistent and we can look like a championship team all the time.”

Hachimura’s role has evolved this season. Sliding into a reserve position has given the Lakers’ second unit a scoring lift, while his perimeter shooting, on pace to top 40 percent from three for a 3rd straight year, has provided much-needed spacing alongside the team’s stars.

The issue hasn’t been flashes of brilliance. It’s been sustaining them.

Los Angeles has shown it can dominate, including a convincing win over Golden State on the first night of a back-to-back. But there have also been nights where the intensity disappears and the results follow.

Inside the locker room, however, belief remains.

Hachimura’s message is simple: when the Lakers defend, share the ball, and commit to playing together, they resemble a title contender.
