Jeanie Buss Opens Up on Luka Doncic Era, Plus LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a defining stretch in franchise history, with a new ownership structure, a new cornerstone superstar, and major questions surrounding one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.

After a year filled with change, Jeanie Buss made it clear where the organization’s focus lies moving forward: building around Luka Doncic.

The Lakers recently transitioned majority ownership to Mark Walter, though Buss will continue to serve as the team’s governor for at least the next five years. Buss explained how that partnership provides clarity and direction for the franchise.

“The partnership will give us the stability to continue to move forward as we build towards a team around Doncic,” Buss said speaking with CNBC’s Alex Sherman and Jessica Golden. “We couldn’t be more proud that he is a Laker. He is a young all-star that the fans love to see.”

Doncic, who signed a long-term extension last summer, has quickly become the centerpiece of the Lakers’ long-term vision.

At just 26 years old, the organization views him as the foundation for its next era, even as it continues to compete in the present.

That balance becomes more complex when factoring in LeBron James.

Now 41 years old and in his 23rd NBA season, James remains one of the league’s most productive stars. However, his future in Los Angeles is uncertain, with free agency looming and retirement still an open question.

Buss addressed that uncertainty directly in the same interview, emphasizing both respect and patience.

“Never say never, but you know, he certainly hasn’t given an indication,” Buss said. “He’s earned the right to decide how his career will go, and you know, he continues to impress.”

While recent reports suggested Buss had previously explored moving on from James, she pushed back on that narrative.

Still, with the Lakers prioritizing cap flexibility and asset preservation at the trade deadline, the organization’s long-term strategy is increasingly clear.
