Steve Kerr Thinks Warriors’ Historic 73-9 Record Won’t Ever Be Touched

With the Thunder now only one loss away from being unable to catch the Warriors’ 73-9 single season record, Steve Kerr has weighed in.

After a blistering 24-1 start to the season from Oklahoma, there were rumblings that Golden State’s 2015-16 single-season record of 73 wins and 9 losses was in jeopardy.

Until it all came crashing down for OKC. They were defeated by the Spurs THREE TIMES and suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of the Suns and the Hornets.

Kerr does not think there is a way any team, including OKC will ever break the historic record.

“I remember at the time I thought no way,” Kerr said in pregame of the Warriors’ 136-116 victory over Charlotte. “Then about a month ago, I thought it would be broken, and now I don’t think there’s any way anybody’s going to break it again. It’s such a difficult thing.

“Oklahoma City looked like they were on their way to doing it, but the reason it’s so hard is you have to have good health, you have to have some luck, and most teams probably aren’t going to push themselves that hard to get there. It’s so difficult, so my guess is it won’t be broken.”

It’s been ten years since Kerr and the Warriors’ set the precedent. The team were so dominant during the regular season and propelled themselves into the NBA Finals, but went down to the Cavaliers lead by LeBron James in Game 7.

The storied coach explained that although the record was a proud moment in time, it’s not something he or the team ever discuss today.

“Never,” Kerr said. “We have a banner hanging in the facility commemorating the record, and, other than that, we never talk about it. It’s an incredible accomplishment. I mean, just stunning to think about winning that many games. I think my favorite stat from that whole stretch was — we went like 135 games without losing two in a row.

“Because losing two in a row in this league, it’s almost inevitable. Just given the way the schedule pans out and injuries, everything else. So, to go 130-odd games without losing two in a row was just stunning. So, I’m really proud to be part of that team, but I don’t spend a whole lot of time looking back at it.”
