Kevin Durant Open to Rockets Extension

Durant (15)

Kevin Durant rang in his 37th birthday at Houston Rockets media day and wasted no time addressing his future. The two-time Finals MVP confirmed he sees himself sticking around in Houston long-term, though he couldn’t say exactly when it would happen.

“I do see myself signing a contract extension,” Durant told reporters Monday. “I can’t tell you exactly when that’ll happen, but I do see it happening.”

Durant, now in his 18th NBA season, was acquired by Houston in a record-setting seven-team deal this past June. He is owed $54.7 million for the 2025-26 campaign and is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Under league rules, he is eligible to ink a two-year extension worth up to $120.4 million at any point between now and June 30, 2026, according to Spotrac’s Keith Smith.

The Rockets believe they found their missing piece after last season’s playoff appearance.

“There’s just not many people in the history of the NBA who have the capacity to do what Kevin’s done throughout his career,” Rockets general manager Rafael Stone said. “It became an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks in 62 games for Phoenix last year, hitting 52.7 percent from the field and 43 percent from three. He was the league’s most efficient isolation scorer, giving Houston a weapon it desperately lacked after ranking just 24th in that category a season ago.

The move also reunites Durant with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, who was an assistant with Brooklyn during Durant’s stint there.

“I had some connections here within the organization, people I worked with throughout the league already,” Durant said. “It just felt organic and natural coming into the gym, getting to be a Houston Rocket for the first time. I always had respect for this coaching staff, this fanbase, this state, this city. So, it feels right.”
