Al Horford Set to Join Warriors on Multi-Year Deal

Horford (3)

The Golden State Warriors are adding more veteran firepower, agreeing to a multi-year contract with 39-year-old Al Horford.

The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania and confirmed by multiple outlets, coming after months of speculation tied to Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency status. Golden State and Horford have “verbally agreed to a multi-year contract,” ending his time in Boston where he helped mentor a young core and played a major role in the Celtics’ 2024 championship, according to Charania.

Horford appeared to confirm the move himself, thanking Celtics fans after news of the agreement broke.

Exactly how his new deal will look depends on the resolution of Kuminga’s situation.

“If Kuminga picks up the $8 million qualifying offer, Golden State can give Horford the full mid-level exception ($14.1 million this year, with raises after), hardcapping the Warriors at the first apron of the luxury tax,” Keith Smith of Spotrac explained. “If the Warriors and Kuminga work out an extension… the Warriors can still offer the taxpayer mid-level exception ($5.7 million), and the team would be hard-capped at the second apron.”

Either way, the Warriors will need to fill out their roster with at least four more players. De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, and Seth Curry are all expected to take minimum slots.

Horford is seen as a natural fit for Golden State, providing spacing as a shooter and strong defense to pair with Draymond Green in the frontcourt.

“Horford, 39, is a natural fit at a floor-spacing center backing up (at times next to) Draymond Green in the Warriors’ offense, plus he remains a solid defender,” NBC Sports noted.

With Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler leading the way, the Warriors are betting Horford can give them one more boost in their push for a title, if the veteran-heavy roster can hold up when it matters most.
