Julius Erving Weighs In on Anthony Edwards’ Shade of Old NBA

Erving

The great man Julius ‘Dr J’ Erving has weighed in on Anthony Edwards’ comments about how the NBA players before him had no skill.

The Timberwolves star claimed that Michael Jordan was the only one that “really had skill”.

Edwards’ comments came in August, but they are still being talked about in the NBA community.

Erving was less than impressed by the take.

“Oh, c’mon man. Wilt, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, and Elgin Baylor, who was my favorite. My personal favorite was Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. If you just take those five right there. You put Anthony Edwards on the court with them or whatever. He would change his opinion,” Erving recently said on the Come and talk 2 me podcast.

Edwards did preface his comments by saying that he didn’t watch back in the day, so he “can’t speak on it it”. Yet he did.

Dr J hypothesised that Ant’s made those comments because he hasn’t had to face enough tough competition in his basketball days.

“He’s feeling himself but he’s awfully good. I mean I like watching him play but he’s from Georgia right? Because I know he went to Georgia for a year or two. He’s from Georgia so there’s something about when you’re an urban basketball player like a New Yorker or DC or whatever, you tend to have more respect because you see more guys who are as good or better than you,” Dr.J said. “He hasn’t had that experience in middle school, high school or college where there were guys that were better than him.”

Dr J is the latest person to comment publicly on what Edwards said and there’s a long list.

Before him Magic Johnson, DeMar DeRozan and Paul George were among the people who weren’t too happy with Edwards’ sentiment.
