A man has been arrested and charged after stealing boxes of custom sneakers off the front porch of Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway.
26 pairs of shoes were stolen by 42-year-old Ronald James, who was caught on video footage wheeling away a trolley full of boxes that contained the merchandise.
James was charged with theft of property, Memphis police spokesman Officer Joseph Hibler told ESPN.
Memphis Police say that officers responded to a theft call at approximately 7:20 pm on August 8.
In a Facebook post Tuesday, Memphis Police reported that when officers arrived on scene, they were advised that security camera footage caught a “male pushing a shopping cart and stealing multiple packages.”
The Police also released still images of a suspect who was wearing a black tank-top and long pants and asked anyone who recognized the man to come forward.
Hardaway, the current University of Memphis head coach told WREG that the shoes were “one-of-a-kind foamposites and a family and friend exclusive that would not be sold in stores.”
Police haven’t yet revealed whether the shoes were recovered and if they will get returned to the NBA legend.
Nike’s Foamposite line was made famous by Hardaway when he played for Magic in the 90s and is still a popularly selling shoe line today.
Last year, Nike released the Nike Air Max Penny 1 Lester Middle School editions to pay hommage to his school – where he attended as a student and later coached.
Hardaway is about to enter his seventh season with the Tigers, who will open the regular season against Missouri on November 4 at FedExForum.
