Isaiah Thomas says a “young kid” pulled an AK-47 on him and his friends and that he’s lucky to be alive.
Thomas said he believed the only reason the gunman didn’t pull the trigger was because he recognised him from his NBA playing days.
The two-time All-Star detailed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), but has since deleted the post.
“Really trippin on how these young kids are moving around!!!” he wrote.
“I really had a life changing moment yesterday where a kid pulled a AK47 out on me and the homies and if it wasn’t for who I was and him recognizing me in my own city he probably woulda ended all of our lives. Be SAFE scary world we live in, stay safe out there.”
Thomas has remained a beloved figure in basketball circles, well beyond his prime playing years.
He is still fondly remembered for his heroics with the Boston Celtics and his ability to dominate at the offensive end of the floor, despite being the smallest player on the court.
The 35-year-old made his return to the NBA this season after being a free agent for the entirety of the 2022-23 season.
He played for the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League, before being given an opportunity with the Phoenix Suns.
He played just 19 minutes for the Suns across 6 regular season games, and four minutes in one playoff game.
