The NBA has finally handed down its punishment over the Kawhi Leonard sponsorship scandal, and the consequences for the Clippers are enormous.
Los Angeles has been stripped of five future first-round picks, covering every draft from 2029 through 2033, while owner Steve Ballmer was fined $30 million and suspended. Clippers executives Lawrence Frank and Gillian Zucker were also suspended, while Leonard received a $700,000 fine.
The Clippers immediately pushed back against the ruling.
“We vehemently reject the NBA’s findings,” the team said in a statement, while also describing the league’s investigation as “heavily biased.”
Journalist Pablo Torre, whose reporting on Pablo Torre Finds Out uncovered the alleged sponsorship arrangements at the center of the investigation, quickly reacted on social media with a single emoji after the punishment was announced.
Torre had alleged that Leonard received lucrative no-show sponsorship deals involving Aspiration and Daktronics. Aspiration reportedly paid Leonard millions despite him performing no visible work, while Daktronics had no history of celebrity sponsorship agreements. Torre alleged the arrangements were designed to circumvent the NBA’s salary-cap rules after Leonard joined Los Angeles in 2019.
The severity of the league’s eventual punishment immediately sparked reaction across the basketball world, with many comparing it to major sanctions handed down in other professional sports.
Former Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban’s response carried particular significance.
Cuban had previously sparred with Torre publicly over the scandal and repeatedly defended Ballmer while questioning the allegations. After the NBA’s ruling, Cuban joined the wave of reaction surrounding Torre’s reporting.
Leonard’s situation is also moving forward. His $700,000 penalty has been handed down, while his reported trade to the Toronto Raptors will seemingly be permitted to proceed.
For the Clippers, however, the consequences will last much longer.
Losing five consecutive first-round picks gives the franchise a massive price to pay for a scandal that began with questions surrounding Leonard’s sponsorship deals and ultimately ended with one of the NBA’s most significant punishments.
