Jaylen Brown and his 10-year run in Boston is officially over, but the city made sure he didn’t leave without one final celebration.
Brown was honored during the “741 Frequency Fest” at Boston Common on Sunday, a free farewell event organized by his 741 Performance brand alongside the city and other local partners. Thousands of fans turned out as Brown was recognized for both his Celtics career and impact throughout the community, according to ESPN.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu joined JB on stage and explained why his connection to the city went well beyond basketball.
“He has changed lives throughout Boston. That’s why there are so many people here,” Wu said. “That’s why we are all heartbroken and still trying to process on what’s happening. We’re never going to let you forget us, and we are never going to forget you.
“We are so honored to celebrate you.”
Wu and city council members then presented Brown with a “Jaylen Brown Way” street sign.
“This is so you’ll never forget this city,” Wu said.
Massachusetts Rep. Christopher Worrell also presented Brown with a key to his district for his work in the Black and brown community, leaving the former Celtics star visibly stunned.
The celebration featured performances from Lil Jon, Lil Baby and A$AP Ferg, while Brown also interacted with fans, signed autographs and performed his recently released song “Just Do It” alongside A$AP Ferg.
Brown later addressed the crowd himself.
“When I got to this city, I said I’m going to go to war for this city. I met so many great people here,” Brown said. “People that helped me in the community, that motivated me on my journey. People that have supported me even when I didn’t support myself at times. I just want to say thank you to Boston, thank you to the city, and I love you.”
Brown’s departure comes after the Celtics traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers on July 1, ending a decade-long run that included five All-Star selections, the 2024 NBA championship and Finals MVP honors.
