With training camp edging closer, several of the NBA’s biggest remaining free agents are still without contracts, including Jonathan Kuminga, Jalen Duren, James Harden, Peyton Watson, Bennedict Mathurin and DeMar DeRozan. While the bulk of the offseason’s blockbuster moves are complete, those six players continue to headline a shrinking market, with NBA writer Ricky O’Donnell of SB Nation predicting where each could ultimately land before the 2026-27 season tips off.
One of the biggest names left on the market is Jonathan Kuminga. Predictions are that the former Warriors forward could ultimately land with the Los Angeles Lakers, where his athleticism and transition scoring would complement Luka Doncic. The Lakers have been linked to Kuminga throughout the offseason, and a short-term deal could give the 23-year-old an opportunity to rebuild his value.
Jalen Duren also remains unsigned despite coming off another impressive regular season in Detroit. The expectation is still that Duren re-signs with the Pistons, even after negotiations stalled in restricted free agency. Rather than accept a qualifying offer, the belief is that both sides will eventually agree to a long-term contract.
James Harden is another player expected to stay put. Predictions have been made that the veteran guard will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, although the structure of his next contract remains a key talking point. Cleveland is reportedly weighing both two-year and three-year offers as it looks to balance flexibility with keeping one of its veteran leaders.
Elsewhere, Peyton Watson has emerged as one of the more intriguing names still available. The Cavaliers could explore a move for the athletic wing if Denver becomes more willing to negotiate, giving Cleveland another versatile defender on the perimeter.
Bennedict Mathurin is also expected to remain with the Los Angeles Clippers despite reported interest from several teams. As a restricted free agent, matching any outside offer remains the simplest path for the Clippers, making a return appear to be the most likely outcome.
Following veteran forward DeMar DeRozan’s departure from Sacramento, the Miami Heat are viewed as the best fit, where the six-time All-Star could strengthen the second unit while providing another reliable scoring option alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
