Steph Curry had hoped LeBron James would end up in Golden State, but his calm reaction to James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers suggested he had already prepared himself for a different outcome.
“That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens,” Curry said speaking from Moses Moody’s youth camp. “There’s a lot of moving parts.”
While Curry avoided expressing frustration publicly, The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II believes the Warriors superstar may be growing tired of the franchise’s continued pursuit of marquee names instead of building around the roster already in place.
“I think he’s probably a little tired of the star chasing,” Thompson said while appearing on KNBR.
Golden State has spent the past several years chasing another superstar to pair alongside Curry.
The Warriors landed Jimmy Butler in 2025, but have since explored potential moves involving LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown and Anthony Davis. None of those pursuits ultimately resulted in another blockbuster addition.
Thompson believes Curry may now prefer a different approach.
“Let’s give me some eager youngsters and we got to it,” Thompson said while imagining Curry’s potential viewpoint. “Let’s go the Davidson route, right? Let’s go the [Southern Conference] route. Just put together the best team.”
The four-time NBA champion acknowledged that Golden State’s priorities have shifted following significant injuries to Butler and Moody.
“The whole calculus of everything changes,” Curry said. “How do you get through their absence and still stay at a certain level? And then how that goes into this year. It’s the same deal. So, I’m a realist on that.”
Curry also made it clear he is focused on reality rather than hypothetical scenarios.
“We don’t live in any alternative universe,” he said.
Thompson believes the repeated cycle of waiting for another superstar has become exhausting for Curry as he enters the final year of his contract.
“His championship hopes is tied to something completely else,” Thompson said. “And I think he’d much rather it be tied to him.”
