Jaxson Hayes Explains Himself & Apologizes For Mascot Incident

Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes is putting an unusual and viral moment behind him after serving a suspension for an altercation with the Washington Wizards’ mascot.

The incident, which took place before Los Angeles faced Washington on Jan. 30, quickly circulated online after Hayes was seen shoving the mascot to the floor during pregame warmups.

The NBA responded by issuing Hayes a one-game suspension, reinforcing the league’s long-standing stance on player interactions with non-players. The policy, strengthened following the 2004 Malice at the Palace, leaves little tolerance for situations that could escalate or reflect poorly on league professionalism.

After returning to the lineup, Hayes addressed the situation publicly and took full accountability for his actions.

“I obviously apologize to the team, the mascot,” Hayes said. “We all try to get ourselves in the mental space and physical space to play a game and when I’m stretching and someone steps on my foot, I might’ve lost it. I should’ve handled it a different way. You live and you learn.” according to team media availability following his return.

The timing of Hayes’ absence highlighted Los Angeles’ fragile frontcourt depth. With limited backup options available, the Lakers leaned heavily on veteran forward Maxi Kleber, who delivered one of his most impactful performances since joining the team.

After the game, Kleber explained the mindset required to remain ready despite fluctuating minutes.

“I think the one thing that you always can do is just support and be there for your teammates,” Kleber said. “I think that keeps you mentally in the game and honestly you just wanna make sure that you do your work. When you do your work you’re always prepared whenever you’re thrown in there so that’s the key component to me.”
