Jason Kidd Secures Multi-Year Extension

Jason Kidd isn’t going anywhere.

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with head coach Jason Kidd, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Tuesday.

The deal ensures the Hall of Famer will remain at the helm as Dallas enters a new chapter built around its reshaped roster.

Terms of the extension were not disclosed, but the move was widely expected after general manager Nico Harrison hinted back in June that Kidd’s future in Dallas was secure, even amid rumors linking him to the New York Knicks job. New York ultimately hired Mike Brown, clearing the way for Kidd to stay in Dallas long-term.

The 52-year-old has been a stabilizing presence since joining the Mavericks in 2021. He guided the team to the 2024 NBA Finals with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, compiling a 179-149 (.546) record in four seasons and two playoff appearances.

The Mavericks’ 2025-26 campaign marks the beginning of a new era following last season’s blockbuster trade that sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for All-NBA forward Anthony Davis. Dallas then used the No. 1 overall pick in the draft to select high school phenom Cooper Flagg, a move that has reignited excitement around the franchise.

With Irving recovering from an ACL tear suffered in March, Kidd will lead a lineup centered around Davis, Flagg, and a retooled supporting cast.

The extension comes at a critical time for a franchise trying to reestablish itself as a contender after a turbulent year. Kidd’s experience as both a player and coach makes him a key piece of Dallas’ long-term vision.
