NBA free agent Gary Payton II is stepping into a new lane, announcing the launch of a professional skateboard league that he hopes will reshape the sport.
The Skate Board Association, a six-team coed league, is set to tip off its first 10-game season next summer in Big Bear Lake, California.
“Growing up, I always wanted to be a skateboarder. The skate park was right next to the basketball court,” Payton told ESPN. “I’d skate there with my friends and they’d skate the park and I’d hoop.”
When partners Royce Campbell and Sheldon Lewis pitched him the idea, Payton said the vision clicked.
“I was like, ‘Why hasn’t there been a professional league like the NFL, NBA or NHL for skateboarding?’ Let’s change the sports game and the skateboard game.”

Payton will serve as director of VIP relations and will also own one of the six franchises. Each roster will include six athletes, three men and three women, with reserves and coaches.
Importantly, all players will receive equal pay.
Unlike most skateboarding contests, the SBA will provide salaries, bonuses, and revenue shares from merchandise. Top draft picks are projected to earn six-figure salaries, while the lowest picks will still take home mid-five figures.
“I want the skaters to be valued, and to get them the right sponsorships so they can take care of their bodies, take care of their families, buy their own crib,” Payton said while explaining his motivation. “If I can change the game for them, that’s a win.”
Looking ahead, Payton envisions growth similar to major pro leagues.
“Skaters put more of their body on the line than athletes in most sports other than football. Why don’t they get the same treatment as NBA players when they’re taking more risks than we are?”
