The Knicks are taking a closer look at Mike Brown.
The 55-year-old has officially landed a second interview for New York’s vacant head coaching job, according to multiple reports.
Brown is one of four known candidates to have completed a first-round interview with the team, alongside Taylor Jenkins, Micah Nori and James Borrego.
Brown “has made a good impression during the interview process and garnered support,” according to SNY’s Ian Begley. ESPN’s Shams Charania added that Brown “has emerged as a strong candidate” for the role.
The veteran coach holds a 454-304 career record across stops in Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. He’s a two-time NBA Coach of the Year (2009, 2023) and reached the 2007 NBA Finals with a young LeBron James.
While Brown appears to be gaining traction, the Knicks are keeping their options open. Begley noted on Friday that “the door is still not closed” on Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, though the Mavs previously denied New York’s request to speak with him.
James Borrego, currently a Pelicans assistant, is also in the mix. The 47-year-old previously coached the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022, going 138-163. He also briefly served as interim head coach in Orlando in 2015.
Micah Nori, 51, is another name under consideration. He’s currently Chris Finch’s lead assistant in Minnesota and has previously worked on staffs in Detroit, Denver, Sacramento, and Toronto.
Jenkins, who led the Grizzlies to the playoffs multiple times, remains on the radar as well. He was dismissed with just nine games left in the 2024-25 season despite a winning record. Jenkins owns a 250-214 mark as a head coach, including a 56-26 campaign in 2021-22.
The Knicks, “are casting a wide net,” Begley said.
For now, Mike Brown has pulled ahead. Whether he lands the job could be decided in the coming days.
