LeBron James’ unusual travel arrangement with the Philadelphia 76ers has caught the attention of investigative journalist Pablo Torre.
The 41-year-old superstar is reportedly using a Fanatics-branded private helicopter to travel between New York and Philadelphia, raising questions about whether the arrangement could warrant further scrutiny from the NBA.
Torre revealed that several league owners have contacted him about James’ travel privileges, with the journalist now looking into the situation.
“It’s something that I also have been watching, of course,” Torre said during the Front Office Sports Tuned In summit. “I know that Fanatics logo, I saw that. I was also a little mad that I didn’t get to get that one first.
“On that story specifically, I will say that we’re very interested. And we are, of course, looking into all the ways that is both a good story, as well as something of interest to the league.”
James signed a two-year, $7.95 million veteran minimum contract with Philadelphia during the offseason but reportedly continues to live in New York.
Rather than making the two-hour drive following practices or home games, James has been traveling aboard a Leonardo AW139 helicopter operated under his partnership with Fanatics.
The flights reportedly take between 30 and 45 minutes, with James sometimes making as many as 12 round trips in a single week.
Each flight would typically cost between $6,000 and $9,000, although James reportedly has unlimited access through his existing Fanatics agreement without paying personally.
The situation has attracted additional attention because of Torre’s previous investigation into alleged salary-cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers.
That investigation was followed by major league sanctions, including a reported $30 million fine, the loss of five first-round draft picks and suspensions for several Clippers executives.
However, there has been no public finding that James, Fanatics or the 76ers have violated NBA rules through the helicopter arrangement.
The central question now is whether the travel benefits are entirely separate from James’ contract with Philadelphia or could raise concerns under the league’s salary-cap regulations.
With Torre examining the arrangement and NBA owners reportedly taking an interest, James’ off-court travel privileges could become a bigger talking point as the new season approaches.
