The Lakers have added another experienced name to their front office, bringing in longtime Miami Heat executive Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager.
Amsler is leaving Miami after more than two decades with the organization and most recently served as the Heat’s vice president of player personnel, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The move fills the second assistant general manager position Los Angeles had been searching to fill throughout the offseason.
Amsler brings extensive experience in scouting and player evaluation after working his way through several different positions during 22 years with Miami.
He joined the Heat as a scouting and information coordinator in 2005 before becoming a scouting and player personnel coordinator. Amsler later served as director of scouting operations and eventually moved into larger player personnel roles.
Most recently, he oversaw Miami’s scouting department while also previously serving as general manager of the Heat’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, according to the Heat’s team website.
The Lakers have not confirmed whether Amsler will take on a similar role with their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, but his background gives Los Angeles another experienced voice in scouting and player personnel.
His arrival also completes a plan outlined by Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka following last season.
Pelinka revealed during his exit interview that Los Angeles intended to hire two assistant general managers as part of an expansion of its basketball operations department.
The Lakers filled the first position earlier in the offseason by hiring Rohan Ramadas from the New Orleans Pelicans. Ramadas brought a different background to the organization, with much of his experience focused on statistics and analytics.
Amsler now adds a more traditional scouting and player personnel background alongside him.
There had been uncertainty over whether Los Angeles would fill the second position amid changes surrounding the franchise’s ownership, but the Lakers ultimately continued with their original plan.
After spending his entire NBA front-office career in Miami, Amsler will now make the move to Los Angeles as the Lakers continue reshaping their basketball operations department around Pelinka.
