There is one team that has been keeping an eye on Klay Thompson, and they appear to be leading the race to land the Dallas guard.
After landing one of the biggest trades off the season in Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat’s interest in Klay has been steady.
Miami need some more shooters and signing Thompson would certainly alleviate some headaches for the team.
“If the Mavericks don’t find a trade for Klay Thompson, his representation will likely request a buyout. There appears to be mutual interest between the Heat and Thompson, who could maximize his shooting alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, plus potentially LeBron James,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
The Heat have had a successful summer, but adding a another piece like Thompson would make them formidable and they continue to be in a great spot to land the veteran, Marc Stein says.
“Miami continues to sit at the front of the line of teams hoping that Dallas buys out Klay Thompson,” Stein wrote.
However, Miami’s won’t include Nikola Jovic in a deal, which has seemingly stalled negotiations, Brett Siegel reports.
“Even though the Heat could get creative with a trade offer revolving around 23-year-old forward Nikola Jovic, this doesn’t appear to be a scenario Miami wants to see play out,” Siegel reports. “Jovic is a young talent the Heat have coveted since drafting him 27th overall in 2022, and he is one of the team’s only youthful options after trading Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis for Giannis.”
Of course, if Miami doesn’t pan out, there’s always old faithful – the Warriors.
Although they aren’t actively chasing their four-time champ, Siegel reported that team sources indicate Thompson would be welcomed back “with open arms” if he secures a buyout from the Mavericks.
