LeBron James could be the subject of a major behind-the-scenes documentary during what may be the final chapter of his NBA career, but comparisons to Michael Jordan’s iconic The Last Dance have already been shut down by those closest to him.
ESPN is nearing an agreement on a documentary centered around James, with plans reportedly including a camera crew following him throughout the 2026-27 season after his blockbuster move to the Philadelphia 76ers. The project is also expected to feature previously unseen footage from earlier stages of his career.
While reports have sparked comparisons to The Last Dance, James’ longtime business partner Maverick Carter insists that is not the direction of the project.
“We are NOT doing anything like the ‘last dance’ LeBron doesn’t even know when his last season is,” Carter wrote on social media.
James later reposted Carter’s statement on his official X account, adding further weight to the message that any upcoming project should not be viewed as a recreation of Michael Jordan’s celebrated documentary.
ESPN has not publicly commented on the reported agreement after being contacted for a response. The report also noted that no financial details or potential release timeline have been revealed, while James himself has yet to officially announce any documentary plans.
The timing of the reported project comes as James prepares for his first season with the 76ers after signing a two-year, $8 million contract in Philadelphia. The 41-year-old has described the move as his “last decision” and now has the opportunity to become the first player in NBA history to win championships with four different franchises.
Meanwhile, veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein reported that Andy Thompson, an executive producer and videographer who worked on The Last Dance, has regularly been seen around James’ games in recent seasons. Although that has fueled speculation, Carter’s public comments suggest any documentary currently in the works will tell a different story rather than mirror Jordan’s famous farewell series.
