NBA Analyst Doesn’t See LeBron James Fitting in Cleveland

The Cavaliers continue to be linked with LeBron James as the four-time NBA champion weighs his free-agency options, but not everyone is convinced a return home would actually improve his championship chances.

NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor believes the idea of James rejoining the Cavaliers sounds better in theory than it does on the court, arguing the current roster isn’t built to maximize his strengths.

“I don’t get the appeal of Cleveland for LeBron other than the fact it’s home,” O’Connor wrote on X. “James, Mitchell and Harden is an awful fit. Not enough D, not enough off-ball movement. Not enough spacing with Allen and Mobley either. A flawed bench. I just don’t get it.”

The Cavaliers have established themselves as one of the Eastern Conference’s top regular-season teams in recent years, but repeated playoff disappointments have fueled speculation that another blockbuster move could be on the horizon.

Adding James would undoubtedly be one of the biggest moves imaginable, although O’Connor isn’t convinced it would solve Cleveland’s biggest issues.

“If he’s going to Cleveland for a homecoming, sure, that’s a great story for the final chapter,” O’Connor added. “But Cleveland’s roster needs a lot of work to make any sense for basketball reasons.”

One of the biggest concerns is how James would fit alongside Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, with all three players thriving when the offense runs through them.

O’Connor believes that combination raises many of the same questions James faced during his final season with the Lakers, where Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves also needed the ball in their hands.

Cleveland do have one advantage Los Angeles lacked at times. Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley remain one of the league’s premier defensive frontcourts, and several league insiders believe Cleveland could consider moving one of its big men if James signs in order to create a more balanced roster.
