Kenny Atkinson Praises ‘Seamless’ Fit Between James Harden and Donovan Mitchell

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t wait around at the trade deadline. In one of the boldest moves of the season, Cleveland paired James Harden with Donovan Mitchell, reshaping the top of its rotation and immediately raising expectations in the Eastern Conference. Early returns suggest the gamble is paying off.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson has liked what he’s seen, not just statistically, but in the way the two stars have connected on a daily basis. Atkinson didn’t hold back when describing the partnership.

“They are two guys that are hungry to take that next step,” Atkinson said speaking to ESPN’s Jamal Collier. “They’ve kind of hit it off. Been seamless, really. Two guys that are so passionate about the game. They’re both hoop junkies.”

That chemistry has translated quickly. Since Harden’s arrival, the Cavaliers have gone 7-1 in the 8 games he has played, logging just over 32 minutes per night. Their only loss in that stretch came against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Notably, Cleveland dropped both games Harden missed due to a thumb injury, underscoring his immediate impact.

Atkinson emphasized that the connection goes beyond numbers.

“Usually when you have that kind of synergy, it goes well,” Atkinson continued. “With them, I haven’t seen any misunderstandings or ‘You should have went there.’ They’ve been pretty locked in on the court and off the court. Couldn’t have gotten better so far.”

Harden’s production has backed up the praise. In his return during a 106-102 win over the Brooklyn Nets, he finished with 22 points, 9  rebounds and 8 assists in 36 minutes. Since the trade, he’s averaging 19.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 8.0 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field, 50 percent from three and 81 percent from the free-throw line.
