The NBA’s defining rivalry of the past decade could be approaching its final stretch, but LeBron James made it clear that Stephen Curry’s long-term health matters more than another marquee matchup.
Curry was sidelined during Golden State’s 105-99 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena while continuing his recovery from patellofemoral pain syndrome in his right knee.
The absence removed another chapter from one of basketball’s most iconic player duels, as both superstars continue navigating the later stages of their careers.
After finishing with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists in 35 minutes, James spoke about Curry missing the contest during his postgame interview.
“Oh, of course,” James said when asked if he preferred if Curry were on the court via ESPN’s Lisa Salters. “The most important is health, obviously. Especially for the both of us, where we are in our career, so speedy recovery to Steph, we miss him out here.”
Curry’s injury has already forced him to miss Golden State’s past three games, and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr acknowledged the team is taking a cautious approach as the All-Star break approaches.
“I think there’s a good chance he doesn’t play until after the break,” Kerr said. “We’re just going to take it day-by-day, but [Monday], he’s doubtful.” according to reporters covering Golden State.
Golden State is scheduled to face Memphis and San Antonio before the All-Star festivities, but Curry’s potential return is being targeted for the second half of the season. Kerr also provided an update on another key piece expected back later in the year.
“He got a workout in today with Rick so we’ll see where it goes from here,” Kerr said. “I think the plan is he’ll be in the Bay all of All-Star break and he’ll play after All-Star break.” according to reporters covering Golden State.
