Anthony Davis’ return to Crypto.com Arena as a Dallas Maverick was always going to stir emotions, but it was Austin Reaves’ reaction that stole the spotlight.
The Lakers pulled out a 129-119 win behind big nights from Luka Doncic and Reaves, but afterward, all eyes were on the jersey exchange between the former teammates.
Reaves didn’t hide what the moment meant. After meeting Davis at midcourt, he explained exactly why the gesture hit so deeply.
“I mean, he’s one of the best players to ever touch a basketball,” Reaves said of Davis. “So, I don’t know why he wanted my jersey. But for me to get his, is pretty fun. I got one the other night too. Yeah, Chris Paul, good player. I got a lot of love for AD, he’s a big reason that I’m where I’m at right now. From Day 1, he was telling me to be myself, don’t be anybody else, continue to work and really just be myself on the court. So, I owe him a lot, yeah, wish him nothing but the best.”
That influence began long before Davis’ departure. When Reaves arrived in Los Angeles as an undrafted rookie, both Davis and LeBron James pushed confidence into him from the start. That trust became the foundation for Reaves’ rapid rise, a rise that now has him looking like an All-Star.
Luka Doncic was in a generous mood and after the game offering a rare compliment to his backcourt partner.
“I think he’s probably one of the best basketball players in this league,” Doncic said of Reaves. “Just the way he scores, he makes a place for others through the game. It’s very good. I’m just happy he’s on my team. That’s probably the last compliment I’ll ever give him.”
