Anthony Davis is preparing for a permanent change on the court. The Dallas Mavericks big man revealed at media day Monday that he will wear protective goggles for the remainder of his career after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a detached retina.
“Doctor’s orders,” Davis told reporters.
The 32-year-old suffered the injury on April 2 when teammate Daniel Gafford accidentally elbowed him in the eye. Davis returned to finish that game after receiving stitches above his right eye, but further evaluation revealed the need for surgery during the summer.
Davis’ eye was still visibly red during media day, which he explained was due to the treatment he continues to receive.

Davis explained that the redness comes from the eye drops he’s still using after surgery. He added that his vision is fine and he won’t face any restrictions in training camp, aside from getting used to the goggles.

The eight-time All-Star stressed that he feels fully ready to go for the start of the season.
Kyrie Irving also provided an update on his own recovery from ACL surgery.
“I’m right on schedule,” Irving said. Kidd added that Irving is progressing “quite well,” but emphasized that Dallas will not rush his return.
With Davis locked in for the season and Irving aiming to make a full recovery, the Mavericks are counting on their stars to stay healthy. The franchise has championship ambitions, and Davis’ new look will be part of that pursuit every step of the way.
