The Golden State Warriors’ quiet offseason could end by signing Al Horford, but Udonis Haslem isn’t convinced he’s the answer.
“You are not addressing length and athleticism by just bringing in Al,” Haslem said on ESPN’s NBA Today. “Love Al, but that is not the one that’s gonna push you over the hump.”
Golden State struggled mightily against bigger, more physical teams in last season’s playoffs. The Timberwolves exposed those flaws in a five-game series win during the Western Conference semifinals.
“You saw the lack of size glaringly against Minnesota last year,” Haslem continued. “You saw the lack of athleticism glaringly against Minnesota last year.”
At 39 years old and 6-foot-9, Horford brings floor spacing and veteran leadership, but Haslem doesn’t see him providing the athletic punch the Warriors need.
“When you talk about bringing in Al, I love Al. I would love for him to finish his career with a guy like Steph (Curry),” Haslem said. “He’s a guy who’s definitely gonna space the floor and knock down some threes, but he does not address your needs. He does not address the need of athleticism. When you talk about bringing in another guy that is older, and he does not address the need of having size.”
Horford averaged nine points per game last season with Boston, but the Warriors’ front office has been hesitant to make significant roster changes while restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga’s situation remains unresolved.
