Asa Newell Makes Leap to 2025 NBA Draft

Newell

Asa Newell, Georgia’s standout freshman, has officially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, according to his agents at Excel Sports Management. The 6-foot-10 forward was a key contributor to the Bulldogs’ successful season, leading the team back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. Newell’s decision to turn pro comes after a stellar freshman campaign in which he averaged 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game.

Newell’s impressive performance included a career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds in his debut game, helping Georgia secure a victory over Tennessee Tech. He also recorded seven double-doubles throughout the season, showcasing his all-around game. His ability to stretch the floor was evident as he made 26 three-pointers and converted 75% of his free throws, although his 29% shooting from beyond the arc remains a point of improvement for NBA scouts.

As one of the top recruits in Georgia’s history, Newell arrived from Montverde Academy as a five-star prospect and quickly made his mark in the SEC. His combination of size, mobility, and work ethic has earned him first-round projections in the upcoming draft, with rankings placing him as high as No. 10. Scouts are particularly drawn to his motor, versatility, and rebounding ability, although he will need to refine his shooting and defense to carve out a long-term role in the NBA.

Newell’s decision to enter the draft marks the end of an impactful single season in Athens, where he left a legacy of leadership and growth. With the NBA Draft Combine scheduled for May and the draft in June, all eyes will be on Newell as he looks to take the next step in his basketball journey.
