‘Zero Truth’ to Jeff Bezos Buying Celtics Rumors: Report

Bezos

For over a month now, there have been rumors swirling about the possibility of Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos purchasing the majority stake of the Celtics.

But one source close to the situation has shut it down.

Podcaster and self-confessed Boston tragic Bill Simmons added fuel to fire earlier this week when he said,”…In the last few days there’s been some I think legitimate buzz about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics, and I think it’s real. I think he’s gonna be one of the suitors.”

Simmons reporting kind of checked out, considering the Celtics current owner is looking to sell for around $6 billion and Bezos is one of the top three richest men on the entire planet.

Plus, he recently had interest in purchasing NFL team the Washington Commanders.

But Nick Wingfield of The Information disputes Simmons’ claims.

“Since Monday, sports media has been abuzz about the possibility that the billionaire founder of Amazon was considering making an offer for the team, after podcaster Bill Simmons gave credence to the rumors in an episode of his show,” Wingfield said. “But according to the person close to Bezos, there’s “zero truth” to the idea that Bezos is interested in bidding on the team.”

NBC Sports’ Tom E. Curran spoke about his reservations on Monday’s Early Edition if Bezos was to become an owner.

“It will be jarring and it will make the Garden — or the Amazon.com Stadium, whatever it turns into — a destination for the world in some ways,” Curran said. “It will be different.
