Joel Embiid Reacts to Gilbert Arenas’ Xenophobic Comments on South Sudan

Gilbert Arenas has somehow become even more unhinged, after his wildly inappropriate comments about Joel Embiid and the South Sudan Olympic team.

Team USA narrowly won 101-100 against South Sudan in an exhibition game ahead of the Paris Olympics, which was fairly shocking considering the stacked USA lineup.

Arenas was very critical of Team USA after the game and a video of him which featured some xenophobic language about the South Sudan team went viral.

“We got the males almost lost to some Africans,” Arenas said before making a disparaging gesture.

He continued, “[Joel Embiid] throwing the game for his cousins and sh*t.”… Come on man, Cool Runnings? We don’t supposed to lose to the Cool Runnings team. They don’t even have shoes. They get their shoes from America. We gotta ship them shoes… They shooting on f*cking peach baskets in dirt with no shoes. …”

Embiid reportedly hadn’t seen the clip of Arenas before he was asked about it and he was disappointed to learn of the video’s content.

“Obviously, I don’t condone it,” Embiid told Africa Basket. “I’m African, first and foremost. I might be playing for Team USA, but I’m Cameroonian, first and foremost. I don’t know exactly what he said so I can’t comment on it. But if it was that negative, it’s just disappointing.”

Embiid went on to explain how impactful Africa has been on his life.

“You see what African basketball has done for us to be in this position, to be able to make some sort of impact,” Embiid said. “Even the position that I am, still have a lot of impact where I’m from and the whole continent of Africa. And that’s never going to stop.”
