Former Warrior Explains Why Franchise Can Win Championship With Current Core

Golden State

The big question surrounding the Warriors is do they blow it up or give it one more run with their veteran core? A former player thinks the latter.

Marreese Speights, or better known as Mo Buckets, was part of the 2015 championship team for the Dubs.

So he knows exactly what Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson are capable of.

“I 100 percent think they got one more run in them,” Speights said on NBC Sports Bay Area’s ‘Dubs Talk podcast. “Those guys are dangerous, man. It’s going to take one or two more pieces they need to sign. And some of them young boys need to step up, get (Andrew) Wiggins locking in for the (entire) year. It’s not over for them.”

The Warriors had a rollercoaster of a season and were sent home in the first round by recent rivals the Kings, but Speights thinks they can rise from the ashes.

“I was kind of surprised that they got that (No. 10) seed because everybody expects so much from them,” Speights said. “I know next year they got something under their hat. They’re going to come back and be who they are.”

He continued, “Those guys are working right now. They’re watching the playoffs and working. I know they’re working. So, whoever counts count those guys out just don’t really know basketball in my opinion.

“If Steph is there and a couple of those other guys are still there. They still got a chance. No matter what.”

Rumors about Thompson going to another NBA team during this summer’s free agency are rife.

But Speights thinks Golden State should prioritize keeping him a one-team player for life.

“He belongs with them,” Speights said on “Dubs Talk.” “Yeah, 100 percent.”

“(Keeping Thompson) is very important because of the foundation those guys have set. And the people out there love him.”
