Luka Doncic made history on Saturday night by becoming the first player in NBA history to score six consecutive 30+ point triple-doubles, but it didn’t matter to Pistons fans.
Despite his incredible feat, Doncic started off the game off on the wrong foot by shooting 2-5 from the field while committing four turnovers – all in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Detroit fans took their opportunity to heckle Luka by chanting “Luka sucks”, even though he’s putting up MVP numbers this season.
It was as if the fans woke something up inside of the Slovenian superstar, as he came to life after that.
He finished the night with 39 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, three steals and two blocks in 36 minutes while shooting 13-24 from the field.
The only other player to record that stat line in regulation in NBA history is the great Michael Jordan.
After the Mavs’ 142-124 win, Doncic was asked about the chanting from the fans and what he thought of it.
“In Detroit? Come on, man,” Doncic said, probably alluding to the fact that the Pistons are 10-53 on the season. “I’m good. I don’t know why they would do that. … I love it. They know it’s not true and they keep going, so I love it.”
Dallas head coach Jason Kidd said he actually didn’t hear the fans chanting “Luka sucks”.
“Well, we know he doesn’t suck,” Kidd said.
For the 2023-24 season, Luka is averaging 34.7 points, nine rebounds and 9.8 assists while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 38.0 percent from deep.
He is currently ranked fifth on the MVP ladder, with Jayson Tatum (fourth), Giannis Antetokounmpo (third), Shai-Gilgeous Alexander (second) and Nikola Jokic (first) ahead of him.
