Mac McClung and Jaylen Brown have addressed tonight’s NBA Dunk Contest, which was ultimately won by McClung for the second year in a row.
McClung said he put a huge amount of thought and effort into the contest.
“Just a lot of thinking. I don’t think I’ve worked so diligently on something so far away for a long time,” he told reporters. “It took a long time … I use my best friends (for ideas). They’re probably tired of me calling them at night.”
McClung also spoke about Shaquille O’Neal wearing his high school jersey during the contest.
“I told him will you put it on and he said, ‘You better not miss this dunk,'” he said. “I was like all right, I won’t miss it.
“What a cool guy to do that, man. What a great guy to do that for myself and my hometown. That just shows who he is. It’s really cool of him.”
Jaylen Brown, on the other hand, was heavily criticised for his disappointing performance. But he insists he achieved his goal of simply having some fun.
“I think, ultimately, in this media era, some players are just afraid to get turned into a meme or whatever,” Brown said. “I wanted to come out and have fun within it and that’s what I did.”
However, it was not to be for Brown. Instead, McClung joins Nate Robinson, Zach LaVine, Jason Richardson and Michael Jordan as the only back-to-back dunk contest champions.
