The Canadian Giant Who Makes Wemby Look Small

Olivier Rioux

By now you’ve probably seen the photos of Victor Wembanyama making Rudy Gobert and Kevin Durant look small.

Well, 17-year-old Olivier Rioux would have the same effect on all three of those guys, even Wemby.

Listed at 7’6″ but claiming to be 7’7″, the Canadian youngster is the world’s tallest teenager according to Guinness World Records, and next season he’ll be taking his talents to the Florida Gators.

There aren’t any publicly available stats for Rioux’s high school career, but he plies his trade at IMG Academy, one of the country’s top prep schools.

While Rioux’s height is bound to attract plenty of attention, it’s important to temper expectations.

The youngster is only considered to be a three-star recruit by On3.com.

He averaged just 3.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for Canada at the FIBA U19 World Cup earlier this year, although he was one of the younger players in the tournament.

Rioux is very much a raw, long-term project. However, his sheer size may very well lead to him popping up in your Instagram feed in the months ahead, much like he did in 2018 when he towered over his opponents to a truly outrageous extent in a highlight reel that went viral.

It’s hard to say what the future holds for the Canadian teenager, but the basketball world will undoubtedly be watching with interest.
