Ja Morant’s personal issues are deeper than what’s been reported, according to NBA insider Marc J. Spears.
“I think there’s a lot going on,” Marc Spears said on the Hoop Collective Podcast. “My prayers to him, that he figures it out. There’s things I’m hearing that I’d rather probably not say on this podcast, but I hope he’s taking care of himself.
“I’m not really worried about the basketball part for him right now. I’m worried about the human part. … My guess now is — not that you’d bet on this — that he doesn’t play the rest of the season as he takes care of himself.”
Turner Sports’ Taylor Rooks, who has a good relationship with Morant, suggested something similar on Monday.
Have been speaking with Ja throughout this & it’s really great to see he’s working through being better in counseling. Last week he texted me this clip we did in 2021 and we talked about the need to take care of yourself.

Meanwhile, this is what Morant’s teammate Desmond Bane had to say about the adversity the team has been facing in the absence of their best player.
“We’ve had an internal dialogue for sure,” Bane said. “We said the roles will be different and guys that maybe didn’t have an opportunity before were gonna get one.
“…We got a really tight group. You know, I think that we do a great job of relying on each other in times like this and really coming together.”
