The San Antonio Spurs were in a celebratory mood on Friday night as head coach Gregg Popovich broke the all-time record for most wins with 1,336.
“It’s not mine. It’s ours,” Popovich said in reference to the record after the game, via the NBA.
“It’s just a testament to a whole lot of people. Something like this does not belong to one individual. Basketball’s a team sport. You preach to your players that they have to do it together and that’s certainly been the case in my life with all the wonderful players and coaches, the staff that I’ve been blessed with, the support of this wonderful city.”
Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson previously held the record at 1,335 – but was congratulatory of Popovich eclipsing his win total.
Popovich has coached the Spurs for 26 seasons, winning five NBA Championships and three Coach of the Year awards.
