With the sports world on lockdown, Ice Cube’s The Big3 was looking to make a huge splash with quarantined preseason play.
Now, the reality TV series has been put on hold until at least August or September.
The new schedule doesn’t bode well for the league, considering sports, including the NBA, may be back in action by that time.
Programmers have been desperate for content since the coronavirus shut down play in March.
ESPN’s “The Last Dance” has done exceptionally well, and the NBA’s inaugural H-O-R-S-E tournament scored well with viewers despite a few glitches.
With fans thirsty for action, The Big3 saw an opportunity to fill the void.
But just like the NBA, Big3’s reality-TV basketball series was halted due to the pandemic.
ESPN will be airing Korean Baseball League games, and there will be ample airtime for other programming.
With Ice Cube at the helm, The Big3 is already considered a success.
The league features many former NBA stars that still love the game and want to play and the Big3 created a platform for Joe Johnson to get back into the league for a short time with the Detroit Pistons.
By giving players a bit more freedom to express themselves on the court, The Big3 has thrived.
Though the league isn’t a direct pathway to the NBA like the G League, it is popular with fans and allows players to show off their skills.
The Big3 could still tip off late spring or early summer.
But, competing against the NBA or MLB would be a huge hurdle for the up and coming league.
Stay tuned.
