Fan Theories Fly as Carmelo Anthony Finalizes Divorce 9 Years After Split

Carmelo Anthony and La La Anthony have reportedly reached a divorce settlement, bringing an end to a lengthy process that began more than five years after their initial separation.

According to court records obtained by TMZ, the former couple informed the New York County Supreme Court this week that they had reached an agreement. The terms remain confidential, although E! News reports they were granted a certificate of dissolution on November 4.

La La filed for divorce in June 2021, citing irreconcilable differences, but the pair had first separated in April 2017 after seven years of marriage.

They briefly reconciled in 2018 before ultimately going their separate ways.

The pair share 19-year-old son Kiyan, who is now playing college basketball at Syracuse – the same school where his father won a national championship in 2003.

Fans on social media are joking that Melo deliberately ran out the clock on the divorce until Kiyan became an adult, saying that the timing could have helped him avoid paying substantial child support.

That theory of course remains speculation, and child support in New York can continue until the age 21 – where Carmelo resides.

La La previously opened up about the breakdown of the relationship during a 2022 appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, pointing to Carmelo’s 2011 trade from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks as a major turning point.

“I’m from New York so being here is nothing new. When we lived here under all of that, that’s when things became complicated,” she explained.

“Now that I look back, that was kind of the start of the demise of the marriage.”

She also described the pressure of living under constant media scrutiny, while making clear it was not the only factor behind their separation.

“It is really hard. That’s not the only reason things didn’t work out, but things got tough with New York, just constantly being under the spotlight and people watching every little thing.”

La La also addressed the rumours of infidelity that surrounded their split, insisting she never simply accepted that behaviour.

“I never turned a blind eye to cheating,” she said, identifying it as one of the main reasons she could no longer remain in the relationship.

Despite the difficult ending, she acknowledged that their marriage was not without its good moments.

“We had some great times. We have a beautiful son, Kiyan, who’s amazing. It wasn’t all bad. We had great, great times. It ended bad, but we’re still friends and we co-parent great.”
