Kawhi Leonard Trade Still On Track Despite NBA Investigation

Kawhi Leonard and his long-awaited return to the Toronto Raptors still appears to be a matter of when, not if, despite the NBA’s ongoing investigation into his time with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Both the Raptors and Clippers remain committed to completing the blockbuster trade, even with the league’s investigation potentially stretching into 2027, according to ESPN’s Baxter Holmes. The two teams reportedly reached an agreement on June 30 that would send Leonard back to Toronto, while Los Angeles would receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and multiple draft picks.

The investigation centers on a four-year, $28 million endorsement agreement between Leonard and the now-bankrupt company Aspiration, which previously held a major sponsorship deal with the Clippers. The NBA is investigating whether the endorsement was a legitimate business arrangement or an attempt to provide Leonard with additional compensation outside of his NBA contract.

Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has acknowledged introducing Leonard to Aspiration but has denied arranging the endorsement deal or having knowledge of it. Both the Clippers and Leonard have consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The investigation could continue well into next year if the NBA, the Clippers, Leonard and the National Basketball Players Association cannot agree on the findings or any potential punishment, according to Holmes. The report added that the players’ union would be willing to take the matter to arbitration if it believes the league attempts to discipline Leonard without sufficient evidence, a process that could significantly delay a final resolution.

The uncertainty has reportedly led Toronto to delay finalizing the trade, as the Raptors would assume the risk of any league discipline once the deal becomes official. Potential penalties could include fines, the loss of draft picks, suspensions for team personnel or even the voiding of Leonard’s contract, although it remains unclear how any punishment would affect a completed trade.

Despite the uncertainty, Raptors president Masai Ujiri remains optimistic about Leonard’s return.

“He is determined and seems in the right frame of mind,” Ujiri said. “You will be hearing from him shortly. I think there is a fire inside of him and we are all excited about that.”
