Lakers Facing Tough Rui Hachimura Decision

Hachimura (7)

Rui Hachimura may have played his way into a significant payday, but that money might not come from the Lakers.

Los Angeles enters the offseason with the possibility of creating major salary cap flexibility, although doing so comes with several difficult decisions. The organization would need to renounce various cap holds, including LeBron James’, in order to create meaningful space.

That financial balancing act could leave Hachimura as the player most at risk of departing.

Several executives around the league believe the Japanese forward could become the odd man out as free agency begins.

“The biggest unknown is swingman Rui Hachimura,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin revealed. “The 28-year-old forward followed up a strong regular season (11.5 points per game on 51.4% from the field and 44.3% from 3) with a brilliant playoffs (17.5 points on 54.9% overall and 56.9% from 3) while playing on an $18.3 million expiring deal.

“Several league sources told ESPN they believe Hachimura could be the odd man out and that he might need to explore the market to find a desired deal.”

Hachimura’s value rose considerably during the postseason. His outside shooting became a major weapon for the Lakers, and his playoff performances demonstrated his ability to contribute in meaningful games.

The problem for Los Angeles may simply come down to timing.

League-wide cap space is limited this summer, which could place Hachimura’s market somewhere around the mid-level exception. That could benefit the Lakers by providing a clearer picture of his value.

At the same time, Hachimura is under no obligation to wait while Los Angeles sorts through its larger offseason plans. If another team presents an offer early in free agency, the forward could decide to secure his future elsewhere.

Despite the uncertainty, there is still optimism that both sides can find common ground. Hachimura has consistently spoken positively about his experience in Los Angeles, and the organization remains interested in bringing him back.
